The Breathing Space scheme: pause interest and creditor action for 60 days
Breathing Space is a government scheme in England and Wales that gives you legal protection from most creditors while you work out what to do about your debts.
What Breathing Space does
For 60 days, most interest, fees and charges are frozen, and creditors can't contact you to ask for payment or take enforcement action. You still need to keep up with ongoing payments such as rent and bills where you can.
Mental health crisis Breathing Space
If you are receiving mental health crisis treatment, a separate version lasts as long as your treatment, plus 30 days.
How to apply
Breathing Space must be applied for through an authorised debt adviser, who will check you are eligible and help you use the time to find a long-term solution.
