How debt solutions affect your credit score — and how to rebuild it

Worry about credit scores stops many people getting help. In reality, if you're already missing payments, your score is likely being affected anyway — and it can be rebuilt.

How long things stay on your file

  • Missed payments and defaults: six years
  • Debt management plan: defaults recorded during the plan stay for six years
  • IVA, DRO and bankruptcy: six years from the start date
  • CCJs: six years from the judgment date

Rebuilding your credit

  • Register on the electoral roll
  • Pay household bills on time
  • Check your credit reports for errors
  • Once allowed, use a small credit-builder card and clear it monthly
