Which debts can be written off in the UK — and which can't?

Formal debt solutions can write off some debts, but not all of them. Knowing which is which helps you plan realistically.

Debts that can usually be included

  • Credit and store cards
  • Personal loans and payday loans
  • Overdrafts
  • Catalogue and buy now, pay later debts
  • Utility and phone arrears
  • Council tax arrears (in most formal solutions)

Debts that usually can't be written off

  • Student loans
  • Court fines and criminal compensation orders
  • Child maintenance
  • Debts caused by fraud
  • Some social fund loans and benefit overpayments

What about my mortgage or car finance?

Secured debts, such as mortgages, and hire purchase agreements are treated differently. You normally keep paying these separately so you can keep the home or vehicle.
